General Gift Card Questions
-
What is a smartOne® Visa® Gift Card?
The smartOne Visa Gift Card is a pre-paid Visa Card purchased just for you! The Gift Card is not a credit card. It carries a fixed cash amount that you can use to make purchases at the millions of locations that accept Visa debit cards. You can use your card to shop from catalogs, restaurants, retail stores, or even place orders on the web.
-
How does the Gift Card work?
You can use your Gift Card just like a regular Visa debit card. Push "credit" at the point-of-sale terminal and sign the receipt. Because the card may not come with a PIN, pushing "debit" may cause the card to decline.
Every time you use the card; the purchase amount is deducted from the available balance until that balance reaches zero. Before you go shopping, you'll need to know how much money you have available. Knowing your balance before you shop will assure that your card is accepted. Once the entire gift amount has been spent, the Gift Card can no longer be used as a method of payment. The card can be kept as a keepsake of the original gift or be destroyed and discarded.

The merchant cannot tell you how much money you have remaining on the card. Knowing your balance before you shop will help assure that your card is accepted.

Can I make a purchase for more than the amount remaining on the card?
You can use the Gift Card to make a purchase of any amount. When paying for part of your purchase with your smartOne Visa Gift Card and part with a second source:
-
Let the cashier know in advance you will be using two forms of payment.
-
Present the card and state the specific amount to be used.
-
Pay the cashier the difference with a second form of payment - cash, credit or check.
-
What if the purchase is denied?
The available balance on the Gift Card is probably less than the purchase amount. Before you go shopping, you should first verify the balance on the card by visiting our website at www.smartOneGiftCard.com or by calling Customer Service using the phone number found on the back of your card. The merchant cannot check your available balance.
If you do not have enough funds remaining on the card to cover the purchase, you can use a secondary source of payment, like cash, check, credit card or check card, to make up the difference. Be sure to let the merchant know you will be using your smartOne Visa Gift Card and another form of payment before you start the transaction.
If your card was declined and there are sufficient funds to cover the purchase, contact Customer Service using the phone number found on the back of your card to determine why the card was declined.
-
Can I use my smartOne Visa Gift Card at gas stations, restaurants, online or over the phone?
Yes, however you should be aware your Gift Card may not be accepted at automated gas pumps. You can pay for your gas purchase with the station attendant rather than swiping your card at the pump.
Some merchants like hotels, restaurants and mail-order companies factor in an automatic tip or additional expenses when using Gift Cards. These merchants may require the card have an available balance greater than the purchase amount to ensure sufficient funds for tips or incidental expenses. Should this occur, instruct the cashier to deduct a specific amount from the card and use another form of payment for the balance or tip.
You can use your smartOne Visa Gift Card for online or phone purchases, but you will need to be sure the name, address, and phone number on your Gift Card's account information is exactly the same as the information you give the merchant. If the information is different, the purchase could be declined. You can check or update your account information on our website at www.smartOneGiftCard.com.
-
Can the Gift Card ever have a negative balance?
Any authorization request that is greater than the card's available balance will be declined. However, there can be times when a Visa merchant allows a purchase without prior authorization. To avoid any charge, you should always know the value on the card before making the purchase. If you exceed your card's limit, you will be billed for the excess amount.
-
What happens if I need to return an item?
Each Visa merchant location has its own return policies and will handle the returns in the same manner as any other Visa transaction. They may credit your smartOne Visa Gift Card, provide a cash refund or issue a store credit.
-
What if there are still funds available when my Gift Card expires?
We encourage you to use the entire gift amount before the card expires. Any balance remaining would be returned to you less a closure fee (please refer to the Terms & Conditions provided with your card) deducted from the card balance. Funds will be distributed by check within 10 to 12 weeks.
